Conclusion

Sea Grant is prepared to flex its institutional strength by:

  • mobilizing universities and solid science to create opportunities and resolve problems;

  • partnering with those whose lives are dependent on sustainable use of coastal, marine and Great Lakes resources to ensure the right problems are being addressed with relevant solutions;

  • leveraging federal investments with substantial state and local contributions;

  • delivering solutions to local, state and federal policymakers and coastal and marine resource users through a robust outreach program;

  • applying the credibility of a non-regulatory program with solid relationships with local communities and water-dependent industries in all coastal and Great Lakes states;

  • fulfilling its mandate and capacity to educate the public about the opportunities, threats and the solutions to our coastal challenges;

  • tapping its ability to increase environmental literacy and expertise among researchers, managers and users of coastal and Great Lakes resources;

  • engaging a highly skilled workforce;

  • facilitating constructive conflict resolution while maintaining credibility; and

  • responding rapidly to crises and other priorities.
    Properly supported, Sea Grant will be able to marshal these major strengths, as well as its skills, environmental knowledge, and rapid synthesis of science-based information to lead the country’s response to the challenges of a rapidly changing coastal and marine environment.
